Imphal, September 18 2026:
Many farmers in Imphal East district are staring at an imminent loss due to shortage of irrigation water.
Over 150 Paris of paddy fields at Yumnam Khunou, Sinam, Esheikha, Haraorou, Sambei and Chingkhu are facing severe shortage of water with cracks appearing on the ground, said farmers.
Apunba Loume Lup Yumnam Khunou's secretary general Takhelchangbam Manisana said shortage of irrigation water is expected to affect flowering of the paddy plants and reduce the yield.
Facing scanty rainfall, farmers had used pumps to water the fields incurring huge costs, he said.
Even when farmers are facing such hardships, the relevant authorities have not yet made the "Dolaithabi canal" operational, he said.
The canal which has failed should be shut or scrapped entirely and converted into grazing fields, he added, seeking measures from the Government to provide irrigation water to the fields.
