Committee bans mineral mining, extraction

Thoubal, April 18 2024:
Along with formation of North Eastern Environmental Protection Committee, a joint meeting of people of Sikhong and Nongpok Sekmai held at Sikhong Bazar on Thursday resolved to ban all sand and stone quarrying activities at Ingourak river as well as extraction of soil and rocks from the hill in Thoubal district.
Subsequent to formation of the Committee, its member Asem Tampakleima read out the resolutions adopted at the meeting including ban on extraction of soil and rocks from the hill which is the source of Ingourok river with immediate effect (April 18) and removal of machineries used in such works by 12 pm of April 21 .
If the said activities continue even after the deadline, then those involved should bear the consequences, she warned.
Tampakleima also declared that no stone or sand quarrying will be allowed at Sikhong ahd Nongpok Sekmai villages where the Ingourok river flows through.
Informing that some people claiming to be from a UG group had threatened some individuals involved in the protest against the extraction and quarrying activities, she further demanded the group concerned to clarify on the matter within two days.
During the meeting, the attendees also chanted slogans and held placards emphasising on protecting the environment, denouncing threat to people, save sources of river, water bodies, etc.
