ESPRF marks 33rd foundation day at Keibul Lamjao

Bishnupur, February 18 2026: The Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum (ESRPF) celebrated its 3 3rd foundation day today at the sacred premises of Phouoibi Lairembi, Keibul Lamjao.

Formed on February 18, 1993, ESRPF is the apex body of registered youth clubs from villages surrounding Keibul Lamjao National Park.

The organisation was established with the objective of conserving and protecting the environment - particularly the endangered Sangai and Loktak Lake through social reform and community awareness.

The function was graced by Dr Ningthoujam Yaima Singh, president of ESRPF; Oinam Ibojao Singh, member, Kha Thinungei Zilla Parishad and vice-president of Manipur Panchayat Parishad; Asem Bidyabusan Singh, senior scientific officer, Loktak Development Authority (LDA); Prof Ksh Lal Bihari Singh.

Manipur University; Dr Kh Shamungou Singh, Sangai conservationist; K Jugeshwore Singh, environmentalist; along with community leaders, youth club members and womenfolk.

Speaking on the occasion, former chairman of the Loktak Development Authority, M Asnikumar Singh, lauded ESRPF's sustained grassroots efforts over the past three decades.

He emphasised that the organisation has served as a vital platform for collective action, mobilising youth and local communities to protect the fragile ecosystem of Loktak Lake and the unique biodiversity of Keibul Lamjao National Park.

"It is time to review the Loktak Hydro Project for the survival of our treasured Loktak Lake and its Sangai deer.

Sangai is the identity of Manipur, its protections must be our collective duty", he said.

Dr Nanaocha Sharma, Director (Additional Charge), IBSD, Dept of Biotechnology, Govt of India, congratulated ESRPF on completing 33 years of environmental activism.

He lauded the forum's consistent efforts in mobilising communities for conservation and noted that IBSD would extend scientific and technical support to assess the ecological impact of the Loktak Hydel Project and promote evidence-based conservation planning.

Amit Kaler, Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF), Park & Sanctuary, Govt of Manipur, assured full government support.

He stated that in consultation with experts and community leaders, an action plan would be formulated to ensure the conservation of both the Sangai and the Loktak Lake through a participatory approach.

The celebration concluded with a soulful rendition of "Tengthari Sangai Na" by renowned folk singer Nganthoibi Ningthoujam, adding emotional resonance to the occasion.
