Kakching, August 16 2026:
More than 500 students from different schools across Kakching district participated in a drawing competition organised by the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Kakching District Committee, as part of its Regeneration Month observance commemorating the 61st Hunger Marchers' Day (Chaklam Khongchat).
The competition was held at Yumbi Macha High School, Kakching, under the theme "Self-Reliant in Food".
According to AMSU, the programme was organised to commemorate the historic Hunger Marchers' Day, which holds significance in Manipur's history.
The day marks the student-led protest in 1965 against the artificial food scarcity and shortage of rice allegedly caused by collusion between traders and the government.
The student agitation resulted in several students losing their lives, while many others sustained injuries, AMSU said.
The students' participation was aimed at remembering the sacrifices of the Hunger Marchers and creating awareness among the younger generation about the importance of food self-sufficiency and the historical significance of the movement.
