The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) celebrated the 79th Independence Day by hoisting the national flag at Congress Bhavan on Friday in the presence of senior party leaders and members.
The event was led by MPCC president K Meghachandra and attended by CLP leader O Ibobi, CWC member Gaikhangam, and other prominent leaders.
They paid tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's independence, and recalled national heroes such as Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General, who fought for the sovereignty of Manipur.
Addressing the gathering, Meghachandra emphasised that independence is not a gift from others but a right earned through immense struggle and sacrifice, and protecting it is the responsibility of every citizen.

Meghachandra called on the public to draw inspiration from the bravery of national heroes and to work collectively to safeguard peace and social justice.
He said that Independence Day should serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect democracy, bring peace, and ensure development in both India and Manipur.
Highlighting the current challenges, he stressed the need for unity in overcoming divisions and ensuring harmony.
"We must work tirelessly to bring India and Manipur towards peace and development, and by standing together with a spirit of unity, we must bring peace to Manipur," he said.
The MPCC president expressed hope that this Independence Day would also mark the beginning of lasting peace in Manipur, noting that achieving such a goal requires the determination and cooperation of all communities.
He reiterated that the values of democracy, peace, and development are intertwined and must be pursued together.
