Imphal, June 15 2021: Admin of a WhatsApp group which uploaded objectionable photos and videos of women has been arrested by Imphal police station and the nabbed person has been sent to police custody till June 19 by a court.

The nabbed admin has been identified as Khanchui Mangkung (27) son of late Jonathan of Sorbung village, Kamjong district but presently residing at New Checkon.

According to police source, a report was received by Imphal police station that a WhatsApp group uploaded edited nude photos and videos of many women without their knowledge and a team of the police station started investigation by registering an FIR under IPC section 354-D (2) and section 67 A/67 B of IT Act.

During the course of investigation, police came to know that the WhatsApp group was formed on March 22, 2021 with Khanchui Mangkung as the admin and it has 355 members.

The group was formed after members of a Facebook page named 'Kanglei Imagi...Nupising' requested and the group uploaded objectionable photos of women.

Apart from this, the admin of the WhatsApp group even facilitated immoral acts as and when demanded by members.

After knowing that the admin of the group is Khan-chui Mangkung, police raided his rented room at New Checkon and arrested him at about 11pm on Monday.

He was produced in the court of CJM Imphal West through video conferencing in view of COVID-19 pandemic and the court remanded him to judicial custody till June 19 .

The source further said that the investigating police team is trying to identity members of the group and initiate similar legal action against them as well.

On the other-hand, Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Dr Binota Meinam has advised DGP Manipur to initiate necessary proceedings for taking legal action against the admin of a Facebook page which uploaded indecent photos of women.

In a communique sent to DGP Manipur, the MSCW chairperson said the Facebook page being followed by more than 27,000 people with one Yumnam Piba as the admin uploaded many indecent photos of women right from the title-cover page.

The admin also uploaded edited photos of many women without their knowledge.

This act not only challenges cyber security but also victimises many women and their families.

While condemning the page, the MSCW chairperson directed DGP Manipur to initiate legal proceedings at the earliest and ensure taking down of the page.
