Don't remain idle after getting degrees: Guv to students

Instead of remaining idle after obtaining a degree from an institute, students should try to gain further experience and personality development to become more excellent individuals, exhorted Governor Anusuiya Uikey.
The 3rd Convocation of Indian Institute of Information Technology (HIT) Senapati, Manipur was held at the auditorium of HIT Manipur City Campus, Mantripukhri on Wednesday.
The event began with a solemn and elegant academic procession.
Delivering the convocation address, Governor Anusuiya Uikey congratulated all the graduating students on receiving their medals and degrees, and further extended best wishes for their success in all their future endeavours.
She also commended all the stakeholders of HIT including teachers, parents and students for its laudable progress in the recent years and their esteemed dedication in ensuring the success of this convocation.
Recounting how HIT Manipur was set up in 2015 under the Ministry of Higher Education, she recalled that initially only BTech courses in Computer Science and Engineering, and Electronics and Communication Engineering were offered.
At present, PhD programmes have been introduced in addition to two BTech programmes on Artificial Intelligence since 2022.This new initiative will increase the career and entrepreneurial opportunities of the state, she stated.
The Governor continued that inspite of being a new institute, the HIT has sufficient number of standardised smart classrooms and well-equipped laboratories for computer science and electronics communication in a clean and well maintained green campus with total 579 students studying.
To meet issues arising out increase in number of students and faculty members, new classrooms are being constructed.
The permanent campus is currently being constructed at a speedy rate and will soon be completed, she added.
Highlighting the various courses offered in the institute to hone skills of the students towards technological advancement and personal development, she expressed elation on learning that Sanskrit course has been introduced for the BTech students, which would be in line with the vision of National Education Policy 2020 to promote traditional knowledge.
Apart from the conventional English language skill courses, Korean and Japanese language courses have been opened, which would allow the students to explore the two countries.
The Yoga courses will help in keeping the students physically and mentally fit, opined the chief guest.
She then said that the introduction of entrepreneurship course is a significant step towards fulfilling Viksit Bharat.
With its main focus on self-employment, the young students are motivated, encouraged and supported to transform themselves from job seekers to job creators after their graduation, she added.
Governor Anusuiya then expressed elation on learning that IIIT Manipur has taken an initiative to ensure fair representation of female students in the institution, which had just four female students in 2022, but now boasts a total of 59 female students pursuing their engineering education.
In addition to this, under the Visvesvaraya Scheme, doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships are being provided by the Institute, which would help ensure more research and growth in the fields of computer science and engineering, and electronics and communication engineering.
Mentioning that Manipur is on the path towards restoring peace and finding an amicable solution to the unforeseen pandemonium, she lauded IIIT Manipur for ensuring a smooth and successful academic atmosphere where the students from across the country feel safe and secure under the able leadership of the director, Prof Krishnan Baskar.
She then urged the young students of Manipur to join BTech programmes in IIIT-Manipur and avail various opportunities provided by the institute as the Institute was set up with the objective of fostering excellence in information technology and research in the northeast region, with a special focus on Manipur to transform it into an IT hub.
The Governor also shared inspirational words and cited her experience in varied fields to encourage the graduates to move forward in their life with sheer determination to reach their goals in life.
During the ceremony, gold medals and certificates were awarded to two meritorious students.
Altogether 55 students were awarded degrees, with 34 students awarded BTech degrees in Computer Science & Engineering and 21 awarded BTech degrees in Electronics & Communication Engineering.
Board of Governors of IIIT Senapati, Manipur chairman Dr Sukhi Oraon, director Prof Krishnan Baskar, members of the Board and Senate, registrar, faculty members, students and other invites were also present on the occasion.
