Imphal, July 13 2026:
The Handloom and Textile Employees Union Manipur has expressed strong resentment over the State Government's appointment of a new Director of Handloom and Textiles.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club on Monday, Union president Chingtam Luwang said the Government should appoint someone with experience in the Handloom and Textile sector to the post.
He alleged that appointing an officer with no knowledge of the department is a move to weaken the Manipur Handloom and Textile Department.
"Whether it is handloom, handkerchief or khadi, appointing someone who knows nothing about it as Director is unacceptable", he said.
Luwang further stated that it is unfair to ignore senior officials who have served the department for years and bring in someone with no background in handloom and textiles as Director.
He urged the Chief Minister to appoint a person familiar with the sector at the earliest.
"If the Government fails to act promptly, the union will launch intense agitation", he warned.
