Seminar dissects solutions for crop production challenges

As part of the observance of International Day of Plant Health, a day-long national seminar on "Current Understandings of Plant Health" was organised in hybrid mode (Online and Offline) by the Department of Botany, School of Life Sciences, Manipur University, on Sunday.
The inaugural function of the seminar was attended by MU vice chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh and Department of Botany head Prof M Damayanti Devi as chief guest and president respectively while School of Social Sciences and Agricultural Sciences dean GKN Chhetry and Department of Zoology head Prof Th Binoy Singh were present as chairman and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Lokendra emphasised the importance of addressing issues concerning plant health, particularly amidst challenges of declining crop productivity and food scarcity, attributed to factors such as plant diseases, pests and abiotic stresses like water scarcity and soil salinity.
He urged young scholars to dedicate their efforts to global research for finding solutions to these problems while commended the organising team.
The seminar had three technical sessions featuring 'with the speakers namely College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, dean Prof Indira Sarangthem; ICAR, NEH region, Lamphelpat, senior scientist Dr A Ratankumar Singh; and Gujarat Biotechnology University assistant professor Dr Gunjan Sharma sharing their knowledge with 60 participants from across the country.
The seminar featured 30 oral paper presentations and 16 poster presentations.
Participants from various institutions including Manipur University, Central Agricultural University, Imphal, University of Delhi, Nagaland University, Amity University, NIT Agartala, Gujarat Biotechnology University, Magadh University, Ranchi University, and NERIST, Arunachal Pradesh, presented their research papers.
