WEYA announces 48-hr NH-102 road closure over non-supply of drinking water

Thoubal, March 13 2026: The Waithou Educated Youth Association (WEYA) has announced a 48-hour road closure along National Highway-102 on March 16 and 17, protesting the continued non-supply of drinking water in Waithou area.

In a press release, WEYA stated that six localities in the Waithou area have been facing a prolonged shortage of drinking water and had submitted several memorandums and even launched agitation since December 2025, over the authorities failure to address the issue.

However, following a resolution to resolve the problem by the authority, the PHED Department began installing pipelines from January 20, 2026 .

But, after laying around 200 feet of pipelines, the installation work was reportedly barred by the NHIDCL, leading to a halt in the project.

WEYA further stated that Waithou Apunba Meira Paibi and WEYA Club had approached the relevant authorities requesting them to remove the restriction on the pipeline installation work.

Despite repeated appeals, the obstruction has not been lifted.

A written complaint was also submitted to the Chief Minister, the Deputy Commissioner of Thoubal, PHED Department and NHIDCL, but the issue remains unresolved, the release said.

Aggrieved by the continued delay, villagers of the area convened a public meeting on March 13 and resolved to impose a 48-hour road closure on NH-102 on March 16 & 17 .

However, WEYA clarified that road closure will not affect medical services, religious rituals, educational activities and other essential services.

The association further warned that if protest fails to elicit a positive response from the authorities, it will launch more intense forms of agitation.
