Imphal, July 12 2024:
Maintaining that protection of human rights would be tough without peace, Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) chairperson Justice Utpalendu Bikas Saha has stressed the need for bringing solution to the current crisis by initiating dialogues.
Addressing a press conference at the MHRC's Palace Compound office, here, on Friday, Justice UB Saha said that as part of MHRC's series of visit to relief camps, he went to Kangpokpi district on Friday to assess conditions of the displaced people living in relief camps and students affected by the crisis.
He spoke with residents of relief camps set up at Kangpokpi Mandap and ITI during which the residents expressed satisfaction on the support provided by the district administration.
They also placed some political demands, which would need government policy to fulfil.
He, however, told the displaced people that bringing solutions through dialogues must be explored along with confessing that the Commission could not effectively function to protect the rights of the people without peace.
The chairperson further told media persons that the MHRC team also paid surprise visit to Kangpokpi and Saparmeina police stations and found several pending cases there.
Sharing his observation that the pending cases are result of ineffective functioning of the officers-in-charge, he advised the OCs to expedite investigation works to dispose the pending cases as soon as possible, Justice UB Saha said.
The chairperson also urged the Manipur DGP to give focus on expediting investigations of pending cases, while maintaining that delay in investigation will lead to denial of justice.
He also emphasised the importance of public understanding their rights.
