BJP Govt asked to pass Women Reservation Bill

Imphal, September 11 2021: All Manipur Nupi Marup has questioned the BJP government as to when the promised 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies will be actually implemented.

According to a Nupi Marup statement issued by secretary Sumatibala, the demand of 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies will complete 25 years on September 12 but it remains unfulfilled till date and the same question is being asked by every woman of the country.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council took a decision in 1990 to make women to occupy 30 percent of the seats in Parliaments of all member countries for five years till 1995.However, India is still far from reaching this target, Sumatibala lamented, and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi as to when the door of the Parliament will be opened to women.

The 73rd and 74th amendments of the Constitution in 1993 allowed 50 percent reservation of seats for women in local bodies and this led to high percentage of Women being elected in local bodies like Panchayat and Municipal Council.

Women Reservation Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on September 12, 1996 but the Bill failed to pass and since then the day is being observed by Nupi Marup as women reservation demand day.
