Awareness camp on diabetes held at Salungpham

Thoubal, October 10 2018: A one-day awareness camp on "Prevention of Diabetes and its treatment" was held today at Salungpham Kang Yambem Thoubal District.

The programme was organized by Rural Development Society Wangjing under "World Diabetes Foundation Denmark".

Speaking at the occasion, Project Director RDS Leisangthem Damu said that cases of diabetes has been increasing day by day.

The main purpose of the camp is to educate the public on the nature of the disease and to provide various safety measures and guidelines to be followed by the affected persons.

He informed that such camp has been successfully conducted by RDS in different parts of Kakching District and will be held in many parts of Thoubal District soon after it has commenced at Salungpham today.

General Secretary Homeopathic Medical Association Manipur Dr Temba who spoke as resource person in the camp on diabetes said that incidence of diabetes has increased dramatically in the 21st century while Type 2 diabetes affected 5.9 percent adult globally.

India can be now called capital of diabetes which was substantiated by a report released by WHO in 2000 which stated that about 32 million people in India were affected by diabetes.

Expressing concerned over the rapid rise of diabetes and a need to initiate major health policy in Manipur, Dr Temba shared that, according a research report released in 2001, 4 percent of the total population of Manipur were affected by diabetes.

In other words, out of the 24 lakh people, one lakh people suffered from diabetes, he added and said that cases of diabetes may reach the figure of 1.6 to 1.7 lakhs by 2025.He continued that many preventive measures and ways are necessary to reduce the number of diabetes cases.

The most urgent steps that can be taken up is to educate the public about the disease and to conduct mass media campaign, he added and said that spreading awareness about the precautionary measures to prevent diabetes and informing public about its impact on health should be conducted on regular basis.

Blood test to measure percentage of sugar level were conducted to more than 100 people as part of the programme.
