BJP stages sit-in-protest
Source: Hueiyen News Service

Imphal, February 10, 2010: The BJP, Manipur unit protested today in Imphal against the price rise of commodities. The price rise of commodities all over the country has greatly impacted the state of Manipur as compared to the other states owing to the payment of several taxes such as government tax, organizational taxes and the frequent blockades of national highways, said Chandra Shekhar, organising secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), North East region chapter while participating the protest demonstration staged at Moirangkhom Bazaar, Imphal on Wednesday.

Emphasizing on the impact of price rise of commodities in the insurgency prone North Eastern states, Amit Thaker, BJP National Youth president (incharge of North East states, West Bengal and Orissa) categorized the variance in the prices of the commodities in various parts of the country.

He stated that a commodity costing Rs 50 in Delhi is being sold sold at Rs 75 in Kolkatta and the same commodity becomes Rs.100 in the North Eastern states.

Amit Thaker while criticizing the United Progressive Front (UPA) government of giving burden to the common people of the country stated that the Gandhi family is apparently sidelining the issue of price rise.

He also revealed that a letter had already been sent to New Delhi by the BJP to discuss on the matter.

Labeling the UPA government's policy as a cheat to the common public, Amit Thaker stated that such policy is leading the public particularly the people Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Average Poverty Line (APL) to starve owing to the price rise.

While informing that a huge rally had been organized led by the senior leaders of the party in various states of the country including New Delhi, Assam, Agartala, Sikkim protesting against the prise rise, he stated that a mass rally under the leadership of L.K Advani would be organized in Delhi.

He also informed that questions would be raised regarding the price rise in the upcoming Parliament session.

Meanwhile, Chandra Shekhar said that such step is being undertaken by the party to make the public and the government aware of the prices of the essential commodities fall.

Criticizing Manipur chief minister, O.Ibobi Singh of only being conscious about his own well being, he alleged that the chief minister owns a vehicle worth Rs.1 crore.

He also expressed concern on the situation of the state by saying that right to live and right to express are totally collapsed in the state.

While protesting, the BJP Manipur Pradesh appealed to the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government that each family under BPL and APL should be provided with 30 kg of rice, 5 kg of peas and 5 kg of sugar in a month.

He also suggested the state government to adopt a food policy to deter the price rise and also for the development of irrigation system for the farmers.

The party also added that the public get the goods in time under Public Distribution System (PDS) and appealed to the businessmen not to engage in black marketing SantiKumar, president, BJP Manipur Pradesh while cautioning the government stated that if their demands are not fulfilled, the BJP Manipur Pradesh would continue with the protest in the state.
