Moirang, March 09 2026:
Transgender social activist Malem Thongam has urged the Manipur Govemment to provide equal security assurances for valleyresidents travellingto hill areas inhabited by Kuki-Zo communities, similar to the security arrangements assured to members of the Kuki-Zo community travelling to the Imphal valley.
Malem made the demand while submitting a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur seeking necessary security arrangements from the Home Department, Government of Manipur, for her proposed solo cycle rally titled "Cycling for Peace in Manipur." The rally is planned to cover all the 16 districts of the State and aims to promote peace and normalcy amid the ongoing ethnic tensions that have affected Manipur since May 3, 2023 .
Speaking on the initiative, Malem Thongam said the campaign is being organised in solidarity with the efforts of the present Government to restore peace and stability in the State.
She pointed out that the prolonged violence has severely affected free movement and normal life across communities.
She stated that the first phase of the peace rally had already covered several States of the country.
The second phase will focus on travelling across all the districts of Manipur to spread the message of peace and harmony.
Malem further said the rally also aims to highlight the need for equal security assurances for valley residents travelling to hill areas, similar to the responsibility for safety assured by the State Government to members of the Kuki-Zo community when they travel to the valley.
According to her, the cycle rally will be flagged off from Lamangdong Keithel on March 12 and will cover all 16 districts of Manipur before concluding on April 15 at Ibudhou Marjing Temple in Imphal East district.
Appealing for public support, she called upon Meira Paibis, local clubs, civil society organisations, student bodies and the general public to extend their cooperation to make the peace campaign successful and help restore peace and harmony in the State.
Representatives of Lamangdong Keithel Ima Lup were also present during the submission of the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.
