Cong MLA accuses BJP of misusing power in election

Imphal, March 06 2022: Congress MLA K Meghachandra has charged the BJP over alleged misuse of power and government machineries to coerce the electors to vote in their favour in the just concluded 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election and said that it would be better to conduct selection of MLAs instead of election considering the way the ruling party acted in the election.

The Wangkhem MLA on Sunday alleged workers of BJP candidate from Wangkhem assembly constituency Y Nabachandra of rigging booths in four polling stations (no 7 to 10) during the phase-II election on Saturday, and submitted a complaint to the chief electoral officer (GEO) Manipur for conducting re-poll in these polling stations.

Interacting with the media after submitting his complaint, Meghachandra said that BJP workers not only assaulted INC agents in the home polling station of Nabachandra but also threatened the INC supporters, who were standing in the queue to exercise their voting rights.

There Were also reports of booth rigging by BJP workers in four polling stations.

He also had submitted written complaint to the returning officer concerned on Saturday itself demanding re-poll in these polling stations.

In the last election too, workers of Y Nabachandra carried out arson, vandalism, assault and poured poison in fish farms of people for not supporting him.

A case is still active in the Thoubal police station in relation with those incidents.

On Saturday too, BJP workers assaulted some INC supporters and those victims are still in hospital.

There were incidents of assaulting and firing on INC agents in Thoubal Haokha area, he said while slamming BJP for using violent and undemocratic means to hold onto power.

He also informed that he had called both the SP Thoubal and RO of the constituency multiple times on getting information about booth rigging and told that they have sent police but no police came there.

On the other hand, hundreds of police rushed to Yairipok and Charangpat when some minor scuffles occurred.

Such response from the district police raised the question on their impartiality, he said.

He also strongly condemned violent activities and assaulting media persons during the election.
