Districts join World Environment Day observance

The World Environment Day was observed in the outlaying districts under different themes, plantation of trees and presentation of awards, on Wednesday.
Mangalleibi Village Level Federation, Utlou under Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission of the department of RD&PR observed World Environment Day with 150 members of 13 self-help groups under the Federation planting 250 saplings including fruit bearing and medicinal trees at the premises of Utlou Makha High School and Utlou Lairam Leikai Pukhri Mapal under the theme "Plant Trees Save the World" .
Students' Union of Kangleipak also planted tree saplings as part of the World Environment Day along with MLA T Robindro at Thanga Meisnam, Salam, Ningthoukhong and Khoijuman.
Sahitya Thoupang Lup (SATHOULUP) Imphal in association with Tentha Khongbal Welfare Association (TKWA) also observed the Day at Tentha Khongbal Multiplex in Thoubal with presentation of the Ningombam Pheiraba Award to TKWA in recognition of the organisation's effort to save and protect the environment.
The award carries cash prize of Rs 10,000, shawl and citation.
Tree saplings were also planted as part of the function.
Manipur University of Culture registrar Laishram Radhakanta and CPI leader Dr M Nara were present as chief guest and president respectively of the event.
Meanwhile, the Pam-bei-led UNLF organised the World Environment Day at its designated camp at Yaithi-bi Loukol by planting around 2000 fruit-bearing trees.
The observance held under the theme "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience" was attended by UNLF Thoubal district secretary Y Liklangambam Meitei, Brigade-3 commander major Khanba, KCP general secretary Lemba, secretary (organization) Loikhomba, Koijam Maring village chairman Necha, Universal Mothers' Organisation (UMO), Thoubal general secretary O Manorama, Koijam Village Women Society secretary Bina Maring, Athokpam Meira Paibi Lup advisor Sobita, Langthabal Khunou Meira Paibi president Senjam Santi, Kakching Meira Paibi Lup activists Kalpana and Mary Yumnam as presidium members.
People from different communities including Meeteis, Meitei Pangal and Maring took part in the tree plantation programme.
The observance of World Environment Day was also held at the conference hall of KVK, Chandel with Chandel DEO Abhijith as chief guest.
Subject Matter Specialist (Soil & Water Conservation) Dr Kangjam Sonamani Singh, while delivering the key note address, stressed the need and importance of observing the day in the wake of recent catastrophic flood and inundation which the state witnessed.
He also stressed the need for farmers to focus on early and short duration crop varieties which are recommended by ICAR, Manipur Centre for assured success in fields as well as to enable secondary crop by utilising the residual soil moisture.
Senior Scientist and KVK Chandel head Dr A Ameeta Devi and Chandel district forest office ranger K Pawan Sharma were also present during the function.
Around 517 saplings of papaya, jamun, tree bean and jackfruit were distributed and also planted in the vicinity of the office premises.
The programme was attended by 68 farmers and staff of KVK Chandel.
Chandel District Administration, Superintendent of Police, ICDS Project Chandel and Selfhelp groups of Manipur state rural livelihoods missions of BMMU Chakpikarong block and Chandel block in collaboration with CRILSIL foundation also observed World Environment Day.
Chandel DC Mayanglambam Rajkumar, additional SP Shankerjit, Chandel OC and staff of DC office and police personnel planted more than 100 tree saplings.
