Imphal, January 03 2017:
Amidst vehement opposition against opening of any new Government office before district boundaries are demarcated anew, DGP LM Khaute today inaugurated Kangchup police station which would function within Kangpokpi district.
On receiving reports that Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam and IFC Minister Ngamthang Haokip would be inaugurating Kangchup police station, a large number of people came out to Singda-Kadangband Road and staged a protest demonstration.
In their efforts to drive away the protesters, police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and smoke bombs.
Gaikhangam and Ngamthang Haokip had however air dashed to Delhi and DGP LM Khaute inaugurated Kangchup police station.
The new police station was upgraded from Singda police station which was functioning under Lamsang police station of Imphal West district.
Taking strong exception to bringing Kangchup police station within the newly created Kangpokpi district, a large number of people raised an uproar.
Urging the Government to first demarcate district boundaries, a protest demonstration was staged at Khurkhul.
