Imphal, October 31 2024:
Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Chairman Dr Usham Deben has appealed to all the people to celebrate Diwali festival peacefully without bursting any firecrackers.
Speaking to media persons at MPCB office today, Dr Deben said that MPCB measured noise levels at MG Avenue and in front of BJP office on October 24 .
The noise level at MG Avenue was found to be 68 decibels which was higher than the standard decibels of 65 during daytime and 55 at night, he said.
As Diwali festival was not celebrated last year, noise level at MG Avenue was recorded at 63.70 decibels.
But this year, the noise level is much higher even days before the Diwali festival.
The noise level may reach alarming levels on the day of Diwali if there are bursting of firecrackers, Dr Deben said.
Apart from causing noise pollution, bursting firecrackers may also cause different kinds of health problems including anemia as they contain toxic gases and chemical compounds like copper, cadmium, zinc, lead, magnesium fume, sodium, potassium nitrate, sulphur, aluminium, barium nitrate, strontium nitrate etc.
He appealed to all the people to contribute towards reducing air and noise pollution in the State.
