Thang-Ta association produces 'Chungoi MaroI'

Imphal, March 29 2026: Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association, Irilbung produced "Chungoi Marol", documenting to preserve the Thang-Ta art-form today.

Speaking at the production event held at the association's auditorium, its director, K Sanathoiba Sharma said Thang-Ta has evolved into a performing art and the association has produced and documented several art-forms of Thang-Ta to help preserve it.

The practice of Thang-Ta, used in warfare and hunting, was prohibited by the British after the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.However, it was practised in secrecy by many, preserving the art-form, he said.

Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy's former Director, L Upendro Sharma urged Thang-Ta associations and State Art and Culture Minister to meet Union Minister of Culture on his likely visit to Manipur on April 8, and push for production grants and other projects to enhance preservation of the art-form.

DSAC Academy Principal Professor H Amujao Sharma and World Human Right Protection Organisation Imphal East District president L Aruna among others attended the event.
