MSCW organises legal awareness programme in Pangaltabi

Kakching, June 26 2026:
The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), in collaboration with the National Commission for Women (NCW), organised a one-day Legal Awareness Programme at Ima Panthoibi Shanglen, Pangaltabi Makha Leikai, Kakching district, on Friday.
The programme aimed to educate women and the public about laws relating to the protection and empowerment of women and children, constitutional rights, legal remedies and access to justice.
The event was attended by Th Tiningpham Monsang, Chairperson, MSCW; Sk Sophia, Member, MSCW; W.Phajatombi Devi, Member Secretary, MSCW and Additional Director (DIPR), Manipur, Khaling Mithourong, Cluster Coordinator, Langmeidong Block MSRLM; and Moirangthem Amubi Devi, President, Anouba Mangai VLF, Pangaltabi, as presidium members.
Around 200 women, including community members, local leaders, women representatives, Self Help Groups and Village Level Federations (VLF), participated in the programme.
Delivering the keynote address, W Phajatombi Devi highlighted the importance of legal awareness in empowering women and ensuring access to justice.
She stated that MSCW, as a statutory body dedicated to protecting women's rights and dignity, has been conducting community outreach programmes, providing legal assistance and counselling services to women across the state.
Addressing the gathering, MSCW Chairperson Th Tiningpham Monsang stressed that while significant progress has been made in advancing women's rights, many women and children still face challenges such as domestic violence, trafficking, workplace harassment, discrimination and denial of basic rights.
She said legal awareness is a powerful tool for empowerment as knowledge of rights and laws enables individuals to make informed decisions, seek assistance and actively contribute towards building an equitable society.
During the technical sessions, Dr Ch Narendra Singh, Advocate, spoke on 'The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005', while Advocate Santa Khaidem delivered a session on the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, and Advocate Thiyam Rajkishor spoke on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
In the concluding session, Dangam Khaling, Member Secretary, Child Welfare Committee, Tengnoupal District, deliberated on the POSH Act and provisions for free legal aid under the Legal Services Authorities Act, focusing on workplace safety and access to legal assistance.
Interactive discussions were also held, where resource persons addressed queries from participants.
