Jiribam, February 24 2026: A Meitei candidate, Lakhi Babu, is reportedly preparing to contest the upcoming Assam Assembly general election from the 117-Borkhola Assembly Constituency in Cachar district as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee.

According to reliable sources, Lakhi Babu is likely to secure the BJP ticket for the constituency.

His election campaign is said to be gaining momentum, with supporters expressing optimism about his prospects in the polls.

Many believe that if he is officially nominated by the BJP and contests the election, he could emerge victorious and enhance political representation of Manipuris residing in Assam, a development that observers say has long been awaited.

On Monday, Lakhi Babu held meetings with key BJP leaders in Guwahati, including the party's organising secretary Ravindra Raju and Assam Pradesh BJP president Dilip Saikia.

Discussions reportedly centred on the forthcoming Assembly elections and the party' strategy to consolidate its support base in the constituency.
