The husband of the woman, whose throat was slit while sleeping at her home at Keikhu Maning Leikai, has been taken to police custody on murder charge.
The husband, identified as Md Mujibur Rahman (45) was brought in by the Porompat police for questioning yesterday and later, he was arrested for the alleged murder of his own wife, Seema Sahani, under Section 103 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) .
He was produced before the Court of the Duty Magistrate, Imphal East today, which remanded him to 10 days police custody till July 2 for smooth investigation of the case.
Seema Sahani, 38, was an Anganwadi worker.
Her throat was slashed using a sharp weapon on the intervening night of June 21 and June 22 while sleeping on her bed with the husband.
She was rushed to the Advanced Speciality Hospital and Research Institute by some neighbours, but she succumbed to her injury.
A public meeting was held at Khergao, the parental home of the victim yesterday, and a JAC was formed.
The public meeting had adopted three resolutions which included a demand for arrest and punishment of all the culprits involved in the gruesome murder.
The meeting had resolved not to claim the body of the deceased until the facts and circumstances of the murder are established, and decided to launch agitation if the culprits are not arrested within 48 hours.
Condemning the brutal murder, womenfolk staged a sit-inprotest at Keikhu yesterday afternoon.
