Thoubal, February 22 2026:
As part of its ongoing "Green & Clean" campaign, EcoNetwork Manipur, in collaboration with Apunbagi Thouna Village Level Federation (VLF), conducted a river cleanliness drive today at th e Heirok-Wangjing river in Heirok Pt III GP area.
Volunteers collected plastic waste and other discarded materials that had accumulated along the riverbank, posing risks to both the environment and public health.
Speaking during the drive, Elangbam Sangita, MBK of the VLF and SISD cadre, said the initiative was taken jointly by Apunbagi Thounagi VLF and EcoNetwork Manipur to restore the Heirok-Wangjing river to a healthier state.
She expressed concern over the river's deteriorating condition due to continuous dumping of waste, noting that many households still use the river as a source of drinking water, raising fears that it could spread waterborne diseases.
Sangita added that similar cleanliness initiatives will continue in the future in collaboration with Meira Paibis and local youth clubs.
She appealed to residents to refrain from dumping garbage into the river and to adopt more responsible wastemanagement habits.
EcoNetwork Manipur president Shinthangamba Laishram said that such rivercleaning efforts, supported by Apunba Thounagi VLF, had been organised earlier in other localities as well.
Today's drive, he said, aimed to conserve and restore the river as an essential natural resource.
Emphasising the importance of collective responsibility, he called upon residents living along the riverbanks from Heirok to Tentha, and those settling near the tributaries leading to Ekop Pat and Kharung Pat, to protect and preserve the river.
