Imphal, December 21, 2013: 'There are many reasons behind the rampant rise of drug trafficking in the State.

First of all, there is an absence of a stringent anti-drug policy which could effectively prohibit illegal drug business.

Even though the Anti-Drugs Act was also enforced in the State, it has not been implemented properly thereby giving rooms to drug peddlers to continue with their illegal trade without much fear'.

This was stated by Laishom Ibomcha, MLA Keishamthong while attending as Chief Guest of 9th Foundation Day of AMADA observed under the theme 'Mayai Kaba Chinzakki Mayokta Meekap Thokpa Numit, Mayai Kaba Chinzakna Manghangadouraba Eikhoigee Saktam Kalhourasi' at its head office here yesterday.

Ibomcha further said the failure of police in filing charge sheet in time in high profile drug cases is due to involvement of VIP and other influential persons and noted that the time has come for the people of the society to digest collectively as to what went wrong in such cases and introspect to overcome them.

Calling upon the people to exert pressure on the concerned authority for inclusion of lessons of drug issues in school syllabus of Class III to Class X, the MLA stressed on the need for holding awareness programme on drugs regularly in all of the nine districts of the State to reduce the problem of drug menace.

Dr RK Lenin, Prof Dept of Psychiatry, RIMS, who was also present on the occasion, hailed the volunteers of AMADA for putting in tireless efforts to root out substance abuse from the State and added that there have been some significant changes regarding the drug scenario in the society following their series of activities.

The foundation day function was also attended by Ng Tejkumar, Law and Prosecution, Government of Manipur as President and M Padamini Leima, president of AMADA as Guest of Honour.
