Girl attempts suicide after rape

Imphal, March 13 2013: A 14-year-old girl reportedly attempted to end her life after she was allegedly raped by a 24-year-old man by taking advantage of absence of family members in the house at Konung Mamang Purana Rajbari in Imphal East district in the afternoon of March 3 .

This was disclosed by the victim's mother, RK Geeta Devi while taking to media in the presence of representatives of various women bodies like Kangleipak Women's Welfare Association, AMKIL, AMOWA, CLK, WASAK, All Manipur Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup, Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, etc at Manipur Press Club here today.

Geeta identified the accused rapist as Naorem Pritam Singh (24) s/o Naorem Priyokumar of Nongmeibung Pung Makhong of the same district.

However, the police claimed that the alleged rapist is a minor and therefore, he has been kept in a juvenile home since the rape incident, Geeta said, while rubbished the police claim and asserted that the accused rapist is already 24 years old.

In connection with the incident, Geeta informed that Pritam committed the crime at around 1 pm on March 3 .

Except for her minor daughter who was sleeping inside, there was no other family member in the house at time.

She herself had been to Guwahati in connection with some works while her husband has been staying in a rehabilitation centre for treatment.

Geeta went on to inform that after the rape, her daughter came to her consciousness around 4 pm and tried to pursue Pritam to marry her, but he declined it.

So, at around 9 pm, the victim tried to commit suicide by consuming phenyl.

Although Pritam's family admitted her daughter in JNIMS, they allowed the doctors to treat only for the poison and not for the rape and her daughter was threatened from disclosing it to anyone, Geeta alleged.

On March 9, the victim's mother lodged a complaint with Porompat Police Station regarding the rape following that the police arrested the accused the next day.

Geeta rejected the police claim that the accused Pritam is a juvenile and that he is appearing for the HSLC exam.

It is said that the accused would be before a court here tomorrow.
