Imphal, January 13 2026:
Presenting a united stand against the Government's legalisation of liquor sale in the State, the Malom Apunba Meira Paibi staged a sit-in protest at Malom Keithel today.
Decrying the sale of liquor in Malom, the protesters shouted various slogans and wielded placards with messages such as "Our Land, Our Rule-No Liquor in Malom", Liquor Fuels Domestic Violence", "Liquor Is Not Development", "Liquor Is Not Our Culture-Keep Malom Liquor Free", "Save Our Youth From Liquor", "Liquor Destroys Society-No Sale Of Liquor In Malom" and "Liquor Legalisation Destroys Families" .
According to Kangjam Ongbi Ibeyaima, president, Malom Mayai Leikai Meira Paibi, Manipur has seen many lives being lost to alcohol addiction and widows left to face insurmountable challenges after their husbands' deaths.
Under such circumstances, the legalisation of liquor sale by the Government of Manipur was unfortunate, she maintained.
At the time, the Manipur Government had reasoned that locally produced liquor will be exported to other States, thereby increasing Manipur's revenue and improving the State's economy.
In a stark contrast, she said that liquor from outside is being brought into Manipur and sold widely.
The mushrooming of many shops selling such liquor from other States is unacceptable to the mothers of Manipur, she remarked.
Womenfolk view liquor as a form of poison.
Youth consume alcohol and under its influence inflict violence on their women and children.
She also stressed on how alcohol damages one's health, leading to serious diseases like liver cirrhosis.
Ibeyaima questioned how mothers of Manipur can remain as mute spectators under such grave circumstances and further lambasted the Government for failing to protect the people.
