42 UT Kukis granted bail by court released from jail

Imphal, July 12 2024:
A total of 42 undertrial (UT) prisoners belonging to Kuki community, who were already granted bail by different courts but languishing in Sajiwa jail due to the prevailing situation in the state, have been released on Friday.
The UT prisoners, involved in different crimes, mainly drug peddling cases, were released from Sajiwa jail at about 1.30 am Friday and transported till Kangpokpi by a combined team of central paramilitary force and state police.
The security team handed over the released undertrial prisoners to Kangpokpi district police.
Of the 42 released undertrial prisoners, 35 were in judicial custody after arrest with drugs or based on FIRs registered under ND & PS Act.
Despite getting bail after trial by relevant courts, all the said prisoners were confined at the jail as their families could not take them to their respective homes due to the prevailing law and order situation in the state.
Among the 42 undertrial prisoners, 35 were in judicial remand under ND & PS Act while the remaining seven prisoners were incarcerated for cases related to violation of POC-SO Act, attempt to murder, stealing and inciting mob.
Notably, 18 Kuki inmates involved in different cases in the ongoing conflict since May 3, 2023 but lodged in Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa were handed over to Sapermeina police station in Kangpokpi district and were later transferred to temporary prison opened by Manipur government in Churachandpur district in September, 2023 .
