Imphal, June 08 2024:
World Meetei Council (WMC) has urged the state and the central governments to take necessary initiatives for saving Jiribam from the ethnic conflict that is going on for more than one year.
In a release, WMC secretary general Yambem Arun Meetei pointed out that recent attack on the Meeteis by Chin-Kuki militants is the first incident of ethnic violence in Jiribam district.
Such acts should be condemned by all.
Moreover, the failure of state government to handle the situation properly thereby resulting to widespread ethnic violence should be condemned, he added.
Asserting that the manner in which central security forces are handling the situation is dreadful, Arun said that central forces instead of protecting Meetei populace from attacks by Kuki militants are being evacuated them from their houses.
Such evacuation led to burning of the houses of Meeteis by the militants, he contended, while observing that similar acts have been seen in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Moreh.
Like ethnic cleansing, Meetei community is made to leave their houses, he added.
Arun further urged both the state and the central governments to take necessary steps for saving Jiribam district.
