Cong tries to hard sell Food Security scheme at Ukhrul

Ukhrul, August 06 2013: Even as the Right to Food Bill is yet to get a nod in the Parliament, a confident Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has outlined strategies for effective implementation of food security scheme and expressed hope of reducing poverty in the cash-crunched state.

In his address as chief guest of the one-day state level discussion on "Food Security Bill 2013" in Ukhrul town hall on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam exuded confidence of passing the Right to Food Bill in the upcoming monsoon session in parliament and stressed the Bill will go a long way in arresting poverty in the country.

He said the states government would institute a monitoring agency in every block of the districts to ensure food security in Manipur.

While assuring the people with transparent and corruption-free food security scheme, Deputy CM shot out a warning against any corrupt practices during the implementation of food security.

Highlighting the UPA's flagship programme like Right to Education, Right to Job (MGNREGA), Gaikhangam believed that with the implementation of Right to Food would alleviate poverty in the country.

A daylong state-level programme (ST) was organised today by the Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) with participation of unit members from other districts.

Today's state level youth convention saw an attendance of state Congress dignitaries including deputy speaker MK Preshow Shimray, parliamentary secretaries Victor Keishing and Amit Shah, and MLA (Khurai A/C) Dr.Ng Bijoy Singh.

Other dignitaries Indian Youth Congress (IYC) general secretary (NE) Ravidran, IYC secretary (state in-charge) Deepika Pandey and PCC member (Ukhrul) Alfred Khangam among others.

Exhorting the youth Congress members in the packed Ukhrul town hall, Gaikhangam, who is also the president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), stated that "every citizen has right and responsibility" and urged the members of Indian Youth Congress not to only "assert their rights but also look out for their responsibility" .

He also stated that if people ignore their responsibility the entire effort of government in bringing about development will remain futile.

Bijoy Singh and PCC member (Ukhrul) Alfred Khangam spoke on the topical subject "Food Security Bill 2013." Other speakers comprise Minister Govindas Konthoujam, deputy speaker MK Preshow Shimray and IYC secretary (state in-charge) Deepika Pandey.

In today's convention, the party's apprehension over the "Food Security Bill 2013" in the ensuing monsoon session was also apparent.

Pandey appealed to the members to remember in their prayer for passing the Bill into an Act.

Dy CM Gaikhangam was at his flamboyant best as he gifted his waistcoat, which was presented by the organisers, to IYC general secretary (NE) Ravindran.

His gesture dropped a pleasant sight for the audiences during the packed session.
