Imphal, December 04, 2008:
The ongoing drive of the Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) to revive the Meetei script has received another boost with the state Education Minister L Jayanta giving his nod to the inclusion of Meetei Mayek till Class X, a press release by MEELAL publicity secretary, KC Khuman said.
A meeting of the expert committee on the development of Meetei Mayek chaired by the Education Minister has resolved that from the next academic session onwards, 30 marks of Meetei Mayek will be made compulsory for all classes upto Class X, the release said.
Two other resolutions were also arrived at during the meet held on December 1 last.
These are exchanging the Bengali script textbooks to Meetei Mayek from Class I to Class X and holding of a separate eligibility test for Meetei Mayek by SCERT.
Other matters on the agenda of the meet which could not be discussed included establishment of a separate directorate and Meetei Mayek as the Manipuri official language instead of Bengali script/Meetei Mayek, the release stated.
Warning strict actions against all schools and institutions who have been acting in direct opposition to the state government's ruling of incorpoarting Meetei Mayek till Class IV in the current academic year, the MEELAL statement further added that the organisation has been continuing its drive for development and utilisation of the script through different activities such as free classes.
