MK Das takes over as DGP from Joykumar

Imphal, August 31 2013 : With retirement of Y Joykumar from service today, Mrinal Kanti Das (MK Das), ADGP (Home Guard and Prison), Government of Manipur has been appointed as new DGP of Manipur.

As soon as the order for retirement of Joykumar was released this evening, the State Government issued another order appointing MK Das as the 15th DGP of Manipur.

He took over charge of the post of DGP in addition to his formal duties from 7 pm today.

Hailing from Bishnupur Dyorhi in Bihar, MK Das is an IPS officer of Manipur-Tripura cadre of 1977 batch.

He will be holding the charge of DGP in Manipur till November 30, 2013 .

Interacting with Hueiyen Lanpao soon after assuming the charge of DGP in his office chamber in the evening, MK Das stated that he came to Manipur for the first time in 1964 as an NCC cadet.

Later on, he came back in 1977 as an IPS officer.

Claiming Manipur as his second home, the newly appointed DGP stated that his mother left for her heavenly abode in Manipur itself and all her last rites and rituals were conducted here.

Since Manipur is where his mother was cremated, he has made it a point to visit the State at least once in a year in spite of his busy schedule outside the State.

MK Das stated that his first and foremost duty as the DGP of Manipur is to bring about peace and tranquility.

However, he declined from giving more information on the strategies to be adopted.

Nonetheless, he hastened to add he would disclose the strategies in his next meeting with Hueiyen Lanpao.

Meanwhile, Y Joykumar was not given the guard of honour on his retirement day as was done in earlier cases.

No farewell function in honour of the retiring DGP was also conducted as there was a belief that his (Y Joykumar) order for service extension would arrive.

As such he left his office without any of these formalities.

Y Joykumar had been the 12th DGP of Manipur from March 16, 2007 to January 5, 2013.He later came back as the 14th DGP on June 22, 2012 after he was transferred by an order of the Election Commission of India during the elections.

He served as the DGP of Manipur for nearly 6 years.
