Imphal, October 28 2024:
The United Meitei-Pangal Committee (UMPC), Manipur has submitted a memorandum to the offices of the President of India, Prime Minister, Ministry of Home Affairs and National Commission for Minorities (NCM) urging immediate intervention to address the ongoing conflict in the State of Manipur.
As per a press release issued by Raees Ahamed Tampak, general secretary, UMPC, Manipur, the memorandum presents some key points such as Manipur's historical context as an independent kingdom until its forced merger with the Indian Union in 1949; communal tensions which have escalated over the past 20 to 30 years; impact of Covid-19 which has worsened the State's fragile economy; humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict resulting in loss of lives, widespread destruction and displacement of thousands and lastly a call for action urging the Central Government to take decisive action to restore peace, hold the responsible people accountable and ensure justice to the affected communities.
UMPC also highlighted the plight of the common people, who are the most affected group in the conflict.
It has urged the Government to fulfil its duty to protect the sanctity and stability of Manipur and to intervene and establish peace, tranquillity and harmony in the State without any further delay.
UMPC Manipur is reportedly an amalgamation of all Meitei-Pangal CSOs.
