Imphal, June 27 2026:
An awareness cum interaction programme on African Swine Fever (ASF) was held on Saturday at MTI Hub, IT Park, Mantripukhri, to sensitise farmers on bio-security measures.
Organised by Mangjil Agro Farmer Producer Company Limited, Lamshang, under the Pigsafe Manipur Mission, the programme follows similar drives across 100 locations in the State.
Mangjil Agro Farmer Producer Company Limited CEO Takhellambam Yuremba Meitei said that despite many pig farms operating in Manipur, the absence of treatment for ASF has led to mass deaths, pushing farmers into severe financial distress.
Many who took loans to set up farms and rear pigs have been unable to repay them, with banks taking over several farms, he said.
He noted that since 2020, ASF outbreaks have caused widespread pig deaths in Manipur.
While the disease earlier occurred once a year, it now strikes every month.
Import of cheap pork from outside has further hurt local pig farmers, making survival difficult, he added.
Stressing that bio-security is the only way to prevent ASF, Yuremba said the programme aimed to equip farmers with preventive knowledge.
Pig farmers from various, districts participated in the interaction.
