Imphal, June 26 2024:
As the conflict is yet to subside for more than a year leaving the people frustrated and dissatisfied and the central government ignoring the plight of the people of the state, Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) is all set for carrying out a "Manipur Kanba (Save Manipur)" walk on June 28 .
Announcing this during a press meet at its Lamphel office, here, on Wednesday, COCOMI coordinator Somorendra Thokchom informed that the walk will commence from THAU Ground, Thangmeiband from 9 am on June 28 and pass through Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.
He urged all communities to participate in the walk along with members of all political parties, ministers, bureaucrats and others including CSOs, clubs, organisations, Meira Paibis, mothers and students bodies.
He asserted that if the central government truly wants to end the conflict, it should consider the people of Manipur as its own citizens.
The world knows that the on-going conflict is a proxy war being waged by the government for its geopolitics, while making Manipur the scapegoat, claimed the coordinator while advising government authorities to act against armed Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists brought in from Bangladesh and Myanmar into Manipur.
"As per the Seventh Schedule of the Indian Constitution, law and order is a state subject, and as such the state government should have the power to maintain law and order and the centre stop being in-charge of the unified command in Manipur.
It is no wonder that as India has no regard for the people of Manipur as its citizens, they have been calling for separation from India.
Manipur was not part of India but merged to the latter on October 15, 1949," he remarked.
Somorendra then informed that the slogans, "India should stop trying to annihilate the indigenous people of Manipur", "We condemn India's communal policies", "Uproot narco-terrorists", "Expel illegal narco-terrorists", "Implement NRC immediately", and "No to combing operation until conflict ends" would be raised during the walk.
UCM president Joychandra Konthoujam, who was also present at the press meet, reminded that as MLAs are the elected representatives of the people, they should be the ones to lead the walk.
He then appealed to all sections of the society to take part in the walk, stressing that the slogans raised should reach the Indian Parliament.
He said that Manipur is now a state in name only due to merger with India.
Hence, the walk aims to put an end to India's divide and rule policy.
