Training programme on empowering tribal women through IFS held

Imphal, February 25 2026: A one-day training programme on "Empowering Tribal Women through Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) in the Tamenglong Hills, Manipur" cum input distribution programme was held today at the Loktak Farmer's Hostel, ICAR Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat.

The programme was organised by ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Tamenglong, in collaboration with the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, Imphal, and the ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Farming System Research Centre for Hill and Plateau Region (FSRCHPR), Ranchi.

The event was conducted under the funding of the NEH Component of ICAR for Eastern Region, Patna.

The inaugural function was attended by Dr Lalita Mohon Gamayak, Director of Research, CAU, Imphal; Dr Ch Basudha, Head of the Regional Centre, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur; Ts Gladney Monsang, Joint Director, Agriculture Department; Dr BK Jha, Principal Scientist (Horticulture), ICAR RCER, Ranchi; Dr H Lembisana, Head, ICAR-KVK Tamenglong; and Dr RK Roshan, SMS (Horticulture) .

Staff of ICAR Imphal Centre and women farmers from various parts of Tamenglong district were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Madhumita Dasgupta, Senior Scientist of ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Ranchi Centre, stated that the training programme was organised under the NEH Component of ICAR for Eastern Region, Patna, with the objective of empowering farmers of the North Eastern states by familiarising them with advanced agricultural technologies and quality inputs developed by the institute.

She highlighted that, as part of the observance of the International Year of Women Farmers 2026, women farmers of Tamenglong district are being trained in the Integrated Farming System (IFS) model in the first phase.

The programme also aims to provide agricultural inputs produced by the institute to enhance livelihood opportunities and boost farm income.

Dasgupta noted that the IFS model has already been implemented successfully in other states and expressed optimism that the system would be well-suited to the region, helping farmers enhance productivity and potentially double their income.

She further informed that this is the first such training programme conducted in the State and that similar initiatives are planned to be extended to other districts in the coming days.

As part of the programme, ducklings, litchi saplings, tomato seeds and various vegetable seeds were distributed to the participating women farmers to support integrated and diversified farming practices in the district.
