Imphal, September 24 2024:
Maintaining that increasing cases of caesarean section (C-sec-tion) deliveries is not a good sign, health minister Dr Sapam Ranjan has urged all concerned to coordinate and help in reducing C-section deliveries in the state in his address during the Awards Distribution Ceremony for "I Pledge for 9 Achiever's Awards" of Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) & Oth er Maternal Health programmes held at Classic Grande in Chingmeirong, on Tuesday.
The distributi on function organised jointly by Maternal Health Division, State Health Society, National Health Mission, and Directorate of Health Services was attended by Dr Sapam Ranjan and special secretary (Health & Family Welfare) Hungyo Worshang as chief guest and president respectively while health director Dr O Sanahanbi Devi and Family Welfare Services director Dr L Tomcha and State Health Society were guests of honour.
Speaking at the event, minister Ranjan highlighted that the present government prioritises the healthcare sector, with special focus on maternal and child health.
He emphasised the importance of improving maternal health, as it is essential for overall societal development.
In this context, the central government is implementing the PMSMA initiative, which offers assured, comprehensive and quality antenatal care free of charge to all pregnant women, he said.
Expressing concern over the rising rate of C-section deliveries, which now account for over 85 percent of total births in the state, the minister stated that the state government, led by chief minister N Biren, views this trend as disturbing.
While confiding that meetings are being held with gynaecologists and relevant officials to address this issue along with acknowledging societal factors contributing to increase in C-section deliveries, Dr Ranjan, however, advised department officials concerned and staff to ensure that the medicines meant for the needy as per the Guidelines of the Government reach the beneficiaries without delay.
He emphasised the need for joint effort and cooperation between different departments.
In light of the current rise in dengue cases, the minister stressed the need for public awareness about proper sanitation while expressing that making the public aware will help prevent the spread and impact of dengue.
He also highlighted the importance of strong coordination between the health department and the Social Welfare Department, noting that collaboration between the two could lead to significant improvements in public health outcomes.
Dr Ranjan further expressed his gratitude to all medical personnel, particularly senior doctors, who volunteered in the maternity care process for those residing in relief camps.
In recognition of their service, the minister also distributed various awards during the event.
Many prominent health facilitators, key health officials, representatives from various organisations working on maternal health and health care, officials from the health department and others also attended the function.
