Adult Literacy Campaign kicks off

The launching programme of the 45-Day Adult Literacy Campaign organised by MA 2nd Semester students of the Department of Adult Continuing Education & Extension, Manipur University was held today at Ragailong Kabo Leikai, Imphal East.
Speaking as the chief guest of the event, Professor Naorem Lokendra, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University lauded the campaign which seeks to promote adult literacy among the non-literate population of Ragailong Kabo Leikai.
He also commended the Department of Adult Continuing Education & Extension as a unique department which benefits people and society in a more tangible way.
Every academic session, the Department visits villages seeking out people who lack basic reading and writing skills and offer them education, he added.
Dr Lamalu Thaimei, HoD, Department of Adult Continuing Education & Extension, said that as part of their syllabus, MA 2nd Semester students of the Department conduct this adult literacy programme every year and visit many villages to impart the light of education.
The campaign at Ragailong Kabo Leikai was launched as a part of this curriculum.
Promoting adult literacy cannot be accomplished by the Department or a club or organisation alone.
It requires the uneducated/illiterate populace to have an aspiration to learn and encouragement from the people around them, said the HoD.
Dr Lamalu Thaimei also thanked the locals of Ragailong Kabo Leikai for their cooperation.
Essential learning materials were distributed on the occasion.
Gaithaolung Maringmei, general secretary, Ragailong Youth Club; Associate Professor Arambam Jolly and Assistant Professor Chanam Sonia from the Department of Adult Continuing Education & Extension, MU were also present at the launching programme.
