Woman dies after delivery, doc's house attacked

Imphal, November 21 2013: A woman who was admitted to Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) for a delivery case yesterday morning died due to excessive bleeding just after giving birth to a male child.

As the consultant doctor was not to be seen around even though the condition of the patient was fast deteriorating, the aggrieved patient party went on a rampage and attacked not just the Gynae ward of the hospital but also the house of the doctor.

The deceased woman has been identified as Keithellakpam Devjani (35) w/o K Netaji alias Naoba of Sagolband Tera Lukram Leirak.

She was admitted to the RIMS Hospital under the instruction of Dr NIngombam Jitendra.

Debjani worked as a nurse in a private hospital at Delhi and it was her second delivery case.

She gave birth to her first son at Delhi.

According to Netaji, Devjani underwent medical check up at the OPD of RIMS at 8 am yesterday.

Seeing the condition of the patient, Dr Ningombam Jitendra advised that Devjani should be admitted at once.

Subsequently, she had a normal delivery ad gave birth to a male child at around 9.37 am.

But even after the normal delivery of the child, the mother was not wheeled out of the labour room for long hours.

When asked about the condition of the mother-son duo, the attending staffs replied that both were fit and fine.

But after sometime, the husband was informed to arrange blood and other medicines as the womb of the patient needed to be removed.

So, the necessary requirements were made.

However, the patient died while preparations were being made for performing the operation at around 2 am today.

All these while the consultant doctor Ningombam Jitendra was nowhere to seen.

Netaji asserted that his wife died due to negligence on the part of the doctor.

On hearing the news of the death of Devjani, the infuriated patient party went on rampage causing destruction in the Gyane ward of the hospital.

A large number of police team from Lamphel police station rushed in to control the situation.

A joint meeting with the Medical Superintendent was also held during which it was agreed to conduct video coverage of the post-mortem of the deceased and initiate a inquiry to find out whether there was any negligence on the part of the consultant and other attending doctors.

Nonetheless, a large number of men and women descended at the house of consultant doctor at Khangabam Leikai in the evening today and ransacked the house.
