Imphal, December 19 2008:
THE SUGNU Police Station, of which construction had started 17 years back since 1991-92, at the cost of Rs 118.35 lakh allotted in phases, was formerly inaugurated by Works Minister K Ranjit today.
With the inauguration of the police station, IRB personnel who were earlier put up at the Sugnu Community Health Centre (CHC) have moved into the new building.

Minister Ranjit, who was the chief guest at the inauguration function, said that the people of Sugnu and surrounding areas have for a long time been facing a lot of inconveniences as the IRB personnel were camping at the CHC.
The people's inconveniences will be over from today.
Besides, the excesses committed by anti-social elements and miscreants in the absence of a police station at Sugnu will also be over from today, he said.
Gunmen move about freely in the Sugnu Bazar areas, and IRB and AR personnel remain silent, they don't do anything, Ranjit said.
In addition to extorting from the shops, the gunmen make monetary demands even from the houses in the localities.
They kidnap contractors and labourers for ransom.
If asked which party, they say don't ask about party, you'll find dead body etc.
Such anti national and anti development activities have given negative impact to the people of the state, he said.
Since the armed groups operate powerfully, government employees refuse to go to their place of posting.
There is no doctor at the health centre.
But now that the police station has been opened, all government employees would start coming to their place of posting.
And those who do not come will not be spared.
From today onwards, the local people will get to live in peace, the minister expressed confidence and appealed to the DGP, Manipur, who was also present, not to belie the people's confidence.
DGP, Y Joykumar, who presided over the function, said that police exist to protect the people's lives and properties.
But in trying to protect the people, the policemen need to first protect themselves.
Once policemen at Sugnu were weak, there was no adequate police force and no police station.
But today there is a police station with all its requirements.
Four teams of commandos who have been trained in special counter insurgency operations will now be attached to the police station.
Four Gypsys and six motorcyles will be provided, DGP, Joykumar announced.
