10th World Bamboo Day celebrated
Khemchand says promoting bamboos will create a turning point in State's economy

Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Yumnam Khemchand has conveyed that the Government is ready to provide any form of assistance to promote bamboos, in view of its increasing potential and importance as a plant and its usage.
He was speaking as chief guest at the 10th World Bamboo Day Celebration 2018 which kick started at Singjamei Community Hall, Imphal today.
H Shyamkanhai Singh, president of SUO Singjamei, Mayor L Lokeshwor Singh and Corporator Th Bankimchandra Singh of Imphal Municipal Corporation attended the event as president and guests of honour respectively.
Highlighting that the Bamboo Mission requires the Central Government's attention, Khemchand stated that bamboos are capable of multiplying its production within 3 years of growth cycle as compared to other trees which takes almost around 40-50 years.
He also appreciated the initiative of IBSD Director Dr Shahu for producing various bamboo products including bed and other furniture items as well as marketing and supplying them to other States.
Taking into view the current scenario of the Bamboo Mission in foreign countries, he said that China is planning to substitute 50 per cent of all home-made materials like tiles and ceilings with bamboos by 2020.H Shyamkanhai further stressed on the importance of bamboo while stating that it is an essential ingredient which is used in the day-today lives and in special occasions as well.
Director, National Bamboo Mission, IFS D D Haokip stated that the climate and landscape of Manipur is suitable for growing bamboos and the Government is ready to provide the required technical support, capacity-building, skill development and financial assistance for more production and in turn to boost State's economy.
Earlier, a rally was .also taken out by the organizers from Kangla to Singjamei as part of the event.
Different bamboos products like bicycle, furniture, electronic goods and other byproducts were exhibited during the function.
Meanwhile, a souvenir containing articles on increasing the awareness of bamboos globally, was also released during the function.
The event was sponsored by National Bamboo Mission (Manipur Chapter) in co-ordination with various Departments including Commerce & Industries, Handloom & Textiles, Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Agriculture, Environment & Ecology Wing, Planning and University & Higher Education.
Bamboo symposium and painting competition will be held on September 19th and 23rd respectively.
The 10th World Bamboo Day celebration will end on September 23.The 1st World Bamboo Day was celebrated in September 18, 2009 at Prachan Buri, Thailand during the World Bamboo Congress at Bangkok Thailand.
The maiden celebration of the event in Manipur was held in 2011 at Singjamei Community Hall, Imphal.The world bamboo organization aims to promote the potential of bamboo, protect the natural resources and environment and to ensure sustainable utilization, promote new cultivation of bamboo for new industries in regions around the world as well as promote traditional uses of bamboo for community economic development.
