Imphal, June 15 2014:
Residents along both sides of Tiddim road have been left in turmoil as Government of Manipur has planned to acquire more land for widening of the road, also known as Imphal-Churachandpur road.
As per an order issued by the Revenue Department in July 2010, the Government decided to expand the Tiddim road section from Keishampat to Malom by acquiring 62 ft 6 inch of land from both sides of the road by dismantling private structures.
The fixed margin of the required portion of the land along the road stretch was marked with green colour by the PWD.
After paying compensations to the owners, the Government started dismantling all the shops, houses and other structures located within the fixed boundary on May 28 last.

The residents have been restructuring their standing properties after the eviction, but some officials from the PWD have reportedly informed them that the Government still requires an additional 1.6 ft each from both sides for widening of the road further.
On Sunday, upset over the fresh plan of the Government, residents of the area denounced the the step taken by the Government as an appalling act.
The joint action committee (JAC) against re-expansion of the Tiddim road has also condemned the Government policy.
Secretary of the JAC, Th Ratan appealed to the Government to fix the road expansion programme according to the earlier decision and threatened to impose bandh along the Tiddim beginning June 20 midnight if the Government chooses to remain silent and neglect the clarion call.
