Imphal, May 13 2024:
In a fervent plea to address the escalating crisis stemming from the influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar, Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing has penned a letter to chief minister N Biren, highlighting the urgent need for government's intervention to safeguard the interests of local residents in Kamjong district.
Expressing grave concern over the burgeoning population of illegal immigrants, MLA Leishiyo, in his letter dated May 9, pointed out that the current influx has surpassed the local population, raising significant challenges for law enforcement and communal harmony.
The MLA revealed that since November 2023, a staggering 5800 individuals have entered Kamjong district from Myanmar, with biometric data collected for 5173 persons under the supervision of district authorities.
Acknowledging the humanitarian aspect, the MLA noted that the immigrants are being sheltered under strict supervision at designated locations, where they receive basic necessities such as food, water, shelter, and other essential commodities.
However, he emphasised that the influx has strained resources and sparked tensions within the community, leading to conflicts over daily wages and domestic issues.
Citing instances of violence and lawlessness, Leishiyo Keishing lamented that local law enforcement agencies struggle to maintain order due to inadequate staffing and the foreign customary practices and beliefs of the refugees.
He highlighted cases of killings and kidnappings perpetrated by immigrants, exacerbated by their ability to evade capture by crossing the border into Myanmar beyond the reach of Indian and customary law.
In light of these pressing concerns, the MLA urged the chief minister to expedite deportation measures to repatriate the refugees to their respective villages in Myanmar or establish alternative shelter arrangements under stringent supervision.
He stressed the importance of preventing a repeat of past mistakes, referencing the granting of Indian citizenship to immigrants in 1968, which could potentially exacerbate the current crisis and fuel unrest in the state.
In conclusion, the MLA called for immediate action to bolster border security and increase police presence in the area to ensure the safety and well-being of local residents.
