Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao: Essay competition, plantation drive held

As part of the Indian Government's "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" campaign, an essay competition was held today at Gem Public School, Pourabi, Imphal East.
The competition was organised by the DPO, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Cell; Zonal Education Officer, Zone-II and Gem Public School, Pourabi, Imphal East in collaboration with the District Administration, Imphal East.
The event was attended by Haobijam Raghu Singh Assistant Inspector, ZEO Zone-II, Imphal East; B Sonamani Sharma, DPO, ICDS Cell, Imphal East; K Devananda Meetei, Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), ICDS Project, Imphal East-1, Sawombung; Sorokhaibam Shyamkesor, former Customs Officer as well as staff of Gem Public School, Zonal Education Office, Imphal East District Administration, workers/helpers of ICDS Project Sawombung, students, local villagers and elders.
One of the main highlights of the event was a Beti Bachao Beti Padhao plantation drive.
Meanwhile, the results of the essay competition was also announced today.
In the Class IX and X category, 1st position was awarded to Laikhuram Retika Devi of Sacred Heart School and Thounaojam Sanamatum of Gem Public School; 2nd position to Lisham Elvia of Gem Public School and Thangjam Trisha of Lamlong Higher Secondary School; 3rd place to Huidrom Shankar and Langpolakpam Rockson of Gem Public School; 4th position to Leishangthem Vensy of Gem Public School; 5th place to Laishram Ethoi of Gem Public School and 6th place to Irom Punelakpa of Gem Public School.
In the Class VI, VII and VIII category, the 1st position went to Laishram Manithoiba of Gem Public School; 2nd place to Senjam Khristina of Vision Foundation; 3rd position to Khoisnam Langlen of Lamlong Higher Secondary School; 4th position to Potsangbam Lanchenbi and Laishram Linthoinganbi of Vision Foundation School; 5th place to Longjam Remix of Gem Public School; 6th position to Laishram Bidyaluxmi and Wahengbam Chitesh of Gem Public School.
Addressing the gathering, DPO B Sonamani Sharma urged everyone to remember the role of women and girls in creating a well-functioning society.
He also highlighted the benefits available to girls under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme.
Sonamani appealed for change in society in view of the discrimination and poor treatment women and girls face.
Stressing on the custom of offering "kheer" to guests during Swasti Puja when a girl is bom in comparison to hosting a feast when the mother gives birth to a boy, he urged people to let go of such regressive practices.
The DPG also advised girls to dial the helpline number 181 if they are ever in danger or caught in any unfortunate situation.
