Lions Club of Imphal celebrates 146th birth anniversary of Melvin Jones

Lions Club of lmphal on Monday celebrated the 146th birth anniversary of Melvin Jones, founder of Lions Club International at Lions Service Centre, Sangaiprou, Imphal.
According to a release issued by Lions Club of Imphal, the celebration began with the offering of floral tributes to a photograph of Melvin Jones by members of the club.
As part of the observance, the club distributed rice, daal and other food items to more than 50 beneficiaries under its hunger alleviation project of "Rice Bag Challenge- One Multiple One Activity".
The event was attended by O Ranjit Singh, president, Lions Club of Imphal; K Chaoba Singh, secretary; H Manikumar Singh, past district governor and other senior members of the club.
It may be mentioned that Melvin Jones was bom on January 13, 1879, at Fort Thomas, Arizona, a remote US Army cavalry post where his father was a scout for the Army.
Under the visionary leadership of Melvin Jones, the Lions Association was founded on June 7, 1917 at Chicago.
It gradually expanded to every comer of the globe and is now the largest service organisation in the world with more than 1.3 million members in over 200 countries.
Hunger alleviation is one of the 8 focussed projects of Lions International.
