Human Rights Day marked across Manipur with awareness drives and community participation

Chandel/Thoubal/Jiribam/Kakching, December 10 2025: Manipur joined the global observance of International Human Rights Day with programme held across multiple districts on Wednesday, highlighting the importance of equality justice, and access to legal aid.

CHANDEL

The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Chandel, in collaboration with Khuhringkhuw Village Legal Aid Clinic, organised an awareness programme in observance of Human Rights Day at Lambung Village on Wednesday.

The event was held under the joint aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) .

The programme placed special focus on dissemination of information on human rights, access to justice, free legal aid and assistance, as well as strengthening social inclusion and dignity for all.

Kh Jacky Lucy, Deputy Chief Legal Aid Counsel, Chandel, served as the resource person and underscored the fundamental rights guaranteed to every citizen.

She also sensitised participants on the availability of free and competent legal aid provided under various NALSA scheme.

Villagers, local authorities, youth representatives and students participated actively in the session.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ts Khiningkham Anal, coordinator of Khuhringkhuw Legal Aid Clinic.

THOUBAL

In Thoubal, Human Rights Day was commemorated through joint initiatives by five organisations.

The event held at MMRC and Unity Park Hall, Khangabok, was organised by the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba, Manipur (PLMPAM), Civil Organisation on Human Rights (COHR), and Manipur Students Federation (MSF).

It was attended by AMUCO vice-president K Helen; PLMPAM vice-president N Prem; and All Thoubal District United Clubs Organisation vice-president M Babutombi as presidium members.

During the event, Lawyers for Human Rights, Executive Director Meisnam Korouhanba; AMUCO advisor Ito Tongbram; and All Manipur Columnists Union secretary Sougrakpam Bubol served as resource persons, and stressed the need for sustained awareness to safeguard human rights.

An additional programme was also organised at POTHA INN, Wangjing, jointly organised by the Integrated Rural Development Service Organisation, Wangjing and Women in Governance, Thoubal.

Held under the theme "Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials", the event witnessed participation from over 150 individuals, including people from the relief camps of Thoubal district, women's groups from different villages and local club members.

JIRIBAM

In Jiribam, the International Human Rights Day was observed today at the auditorium hall of RK Sanatombi Vidyalaya School, Jiribam.

The programme was jointly organised by the AJMP, AJUCA, AMAWOVA and MSF Jiribam.

The event was attended by AJMP president S Sushila Devi; AJUCA president M Maipaksana Mangang; AMAWOVA president Th Priyadarshini Devi; MSF Jiribam president Th Samanand Singh and RK Sanatombi Vidyala School, principal S Maniton Sing as presidium members.

During the event, the gathering observed a two-minute silence in memory of victims of human rights violations.

AJUCA vice-president N Dharmendra Meetei delivered the welcome address, while the keynote address was delivered by Y Romen Singh, general secretary of AJUCA.

Mufida Haque, advocate, served as the resource person and delivered insights on the constitutional rights, legal protections, and the need for citizens to remain vigilant.

KAKCHING

Human Rights Day was also observed at Smart Universal Academy, Sekmaijin Khunou, in an event jointly organised by the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), AWAWOVA, Manipur Students Federation (MSF) and Committee on Human Rights (COHR) .

The event held under the theme "Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials", was attended by KADUCO president H Keshwarjit; AMUCO vice-president Ksh Rajen; AMAWOVA vice president S Romita; MSF vice-president Y James; PLMPAM vice-president A Ibetombi; Smart Universal Academy, secretary K Kiran; principal of Smart Universal Academy, K Dhananjoy as presidium members.

Dr Dhanabir Laishram, and advocate Meihoubam Rakesh served as resource persons, elaborating on legal safeguards, social responsibilities, and the need for continued community engagement.
