Imphal, October 10 2026:
90 percent of paddy fields in areas under Haraorou Tangkham Gram Panchayat in Imphal East are facing severe water scarcity, and cultivators are staring at an imminent loss.
Haraorou Tangkham Gram Panchayat falls under Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency.
Chairman of the Administrative Committee Haraorou, Tangkham Gram Panchayat, Nongthombam Bijen, said that there are around 500 Paris of paddy fields in the area, and majority of the fields are being tended by tenant farmers.
Due to scanty rainfall, around 400 Paris of fields are parched and have developed cracks.
With paddy crops failing to even flower, the cultivators are sure to incur huge losses, Bijen said.
While they have requested the owners of the fields to waive off loushal (portion of crop given to owners), they have also urged officials of the Agriculture Department to conduct a survey and assess the situation on the ground, Bijen said.
Mongjam Rajendro, a cultivator from Haraorou Tangkham Morok Ingkhol, also echoed similar concerns and urged the owners of the fields to assess the conditions of the fields.
Considering the hardships the cultivators are going through, he urged the owners to waive off the loushal this year.
