Steps taken to foster socio-economic growth, address crisis
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, May 10 2024: In response to the unceasing ethnic tension, the state government has initiated proactive measures to address the socio-economic challenges faced by its youth.

Through a series of initiatives spearheaded by a Supreme Court-appointed Committee led by Justice Gita Mittal, the government aims to provide job opportunities for 2000 unemployed youths while addressing the psychological trauma resulting from recent upheavals.

These initiatives, launched under the mentorship of Justice Gita Mittal in a function held at the auditorium of Manipur State Film Development Society, here on Friday, not only offer employment prospects but also serve as a pathway for individuals to overcome the psychological impacts of communal crises.

Chief secretary Dr Vineet Joshi presid ed over the function in the presence of Committee on Relief and Rehabilitation in Manipur members justice Shalini P Joshi, justice Asha Menon and senior officials of the state government.

Speaking on the occasion, justice Gita Mittal observed that as over 60,000 displaced persons are taking refuge in relief camps it would take time for them to return to their normal lives and resettle in their respective homes without fear.

In this situation, the government has introduced a comprehensive skill training programme in the hospitality sector.

This initiative, conducted under the capacity building for service provider through Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council, aims to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to secure employment in the thriving hospitality industry.

The training programmes will cover various aspects of hospitality services, including food and beverages, guest service, customer relations, and front office management.

A total of 2000 internally displaced youths from Relief Camps across the state will have the opportunity to undergo comprehensive training with Primero Skilling Pvt Ltd as the training partner.

Training sessions will be conducted in five centres located at Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Bishnupur, Imphal East, and Kakching, ensuring accessibility to youth from different regions of the state, justice Gita Mittal said.

Recognising the displacement of numerous healthcare professionals, including doctors and paramedics, particularly in the hill districts, she informed that the government has conducted a comprehensive assessment of the situation.

As part of its strategy to re-operationalise affected health facilities through electronic modes, the government has collaborated with Apollo Hospital Enterprise Limited, Hyderabad which has been tasked with overseeing the reactivation of the Borobeka Primary Health Centre (PHC) and extending telemedicine services to other locations, including PHC Thanlon (Churachandpur), PHC Henglep (Churachandpur), and PHC Senvon (Pherzawl).

She further informed that telemedicine services, including consultations with specialists, will be conducted electronically, ensuring residents have access to quality medical care despite the unrest.

By leveraging the expertise and resources of Apollo Hospital Enterprise Limited, the government aims to swiftly resume operations and restore normalcy to healthcare services in affected areas.

In a bid to uplift public spirits and promote resilience, a unique certification programme aimed at empowering grassroots athletes to become coaches across various disciplines has also been unveiled.

This initiative, part of the government 's commitment to harnessing the transformative power of sports, seeks to provide opportunities for 300 trainees recruited from across the state to undergo specialised training, Justice Gita maintained.

She also informed that the certification programme, designed to empower youth through sports, will offer intensive training and mentorship over a comprehensive two-week residential course.

Conducted by TENVIC Sports, the programme's training partner, the course will equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to become coaches in football, table tennis, badminton, judo, and weightlifting.

Establishing training centres at strategic locations such as Khuman Lampak, Imphal, and Kangpokpi ensures accessibility to trainees from various regions of the state.

By nurturing grassroots athletes into coaches, the initiative not only promotes sports development but also creates avenues for positive engagement and personal growth among youth, she said.

In a significant collaboration aimed at boosting job opportunities and fostering economic growth, the government has joined forces with Hindu College, Delhi University, Ultra International Ltd, and CSIR CIMAP Lucknow to launch a pioneering training programme in fragrance formulations for wellness products.

This initiative, slated to commence in June 2024 at Hindu College, Delhi University, aims to empower 30 women with specialised skills in fragrance formulation, leveraging the state's abundant resources of herbs and medicinal plants, she added.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by staff officer to the chief secretary, Mercina Panmei informed that the government plans to enhance its operations by cultivating both existing and new herbs, establishing distillery units, and developing essential infrastructure with a vision to establish Manipur as a central hub for the perfumery industry.

By harnessing the state's rich resources, the government aims to position the state as the leading perfumery industry hub in the Northeast region, the statement added.
