Culture is Manipur's identity, must be promoted: Minister Loken

Imphal, August 09 2026: Arts and Culture Minister Kh Loken has said that the Government is taking up measures to further promote Manipur's culture, which has given Manipur its identity in the world, by introducing new culture-related courses in Manipur University of Culture and by providing benefits to Meitei artists outside Manipur under the Chief Ministergi Artists Singgi Tengbang (CMAT) Scheme.

He was speaking as a guest at the 7th Foundation Day of Amai Piba Apun-lup (APAL) Kangleipak and the 3rd Cultural Award distribution function for persons working in different cultural fields, held at the hall of Asian Academy of Performing Arts at Chabung Company, Mayang Imphal.

Kh Loken said Manipur is a land where different communities live together.

Misunderstandings among communities have led to unwanted incidents in the State and have greatly hampered its development.

Therefore, there is a need for everyone to stand together again, he said, adding that the Government has started various initiatives to further develop our culture which plays a big role in giving Manipur its identity.

Speaking at the function, Mayang Imphal AC MLA K Robindro said that in the State, many people gather on Sundays and Fridays to pray and discuss the welfare and development of their respective communities.

However, he noted that despite renewed calls to observe Nongma Panba every month to pray collectively, many Meiteis still treat the day as an occasion for feasts and picnics.

Such practices should be abandoned and everyone should collectively shoulder responsibility for the welfare of the community, he added.
