Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Manipur (Poirei Leimarol) and All Manipur Women's Voluntary Organisation (AMAWOVA) have strongly condemned the murder of a class 6 girl student at Khongjom Sapam in Thoubal district, while she was on her way to school on Thursday.
Both organisations have demanded stringent punishment for the accused.
At a press meet held at Poirei Leimarol's office in Khoyathong, here, on Saturday, AMAWOVA president Y Kunjarani voiced her concerns over increasing incidents of violent crimes in the state.
She highlighted the recent murder of the girl student and another woman who was killed by her husband amidst the ongoing ethnic conflict and recent flood-related hardships.
Kunjarani emphasised the need for families to be vigilant if any members are struggling with drug addiction, noting that students often travel through secluded areas to reach school, which heightens their vulnerability.
She stressed on the severe impact of such crimes on the safety and security of students and, and concern felt by their parents.
She called on the government to implement effective measures to prevent crimes against women, who are playing crucial roles as mothers and activists during the current conflict.
Poirei Leimarol president S Mem-cha echoed the same sentiments, condemning the murder and urging the government to expedite the investigation and ensure the accused is appropriately punished.
She pointed out that drug and alcohol abuse have devastated many families, and despite the government efforts to combat drug use, the number of users continues to rise.
She called for a policy review to enhance its effectiveness and encouraged parents to monitor their children for signs of substance abuse to allow for early intervention.
Both Kunjarani and Memcha also expressed strong resentment over the prevailing situation in Jiribam, where several Meetei houses have been burned in the aftermath of the brutal murder of a Meetei man.
They conveyed the dissatisfaction of Meira Paibi members over the escalating violence and urged the government to take immediate steps to protect the people and prevent Jiribam from becoming another Churachandpur.
The Meira Paibi leaders also stressed the importance of safeguarding the community and maintaining peace, calling for comprehensive measures to address the root causes of violence and ensure justice to the victims.
